Think about a common situation that occurs every day. Your teenage child has received their license. You allow your child to use your vehicle. Your child is stopped by police for running a red light. The Officer is able pull up the owner‘s vehicle registration but would not necessarily know who is truly operating the vehicle until making contact with the driver. The flustered driver’s movements and the reaching for credentials makes the Officer anxious. The Officer tells your child to stop moving around and without thinking the child reaches for their phone. The Officer mistakes the phone for a possible weapon and we know all too often how this story ends.
P.E.A.C.E, Police Enforcement and Civilian Encounters, is a system for conveying vehicle and occupant information (e.g., registration, insurance, license, occupants profile, etc.) to law enforcement officials during traffic stops. The system comprises a mobile device, such as a smart phone, for activating the PEACE system at the time of a traffic stop, and an electronic decal visibly mounted on a vehicle, activated by the smart phone app, which via a hardware/software app provides information to a traffic law enforcement official and/or other concerned stakeholders – e.g., parents, spouses, family members, community groups, etc. The app may communicate directly with law enforcement information and database systems similarly to police video cams. In another aspect, the vehicle operator may be alerted on the mobile device by a law enforcement system when law enforcement officials are making a stop.
Traffic stops are the most dangerous encounters for police and civilians
